Shawn is a Wyoming-based Wealth Advisor with Ashton Thomas. After years of discussing the idea of working together, Shawn joined his cousin, Michael Porter, as part of the Casper Private Wealth Team.
“I’m focused on building relationships with my clients, understanding their goals, and looking at wealth holistically through a financial plan,” says Shawn. “The plan outlines the objectives they are aiming for and shows each client the pathways to achieve those goals.”
The evolution of Shawn’s career over 28 years in financial services has given him the perspective he brings to each wealth management client he serves. Most recently, he was a Wealth Advisor with First Interstate in Casper. Shawn and a handful of other financial professionals were an instrumental part of the transformation of First Interstate’s service model during a time of evolution in the financial services industry. When Shawn joined First Interstate in 2000 as a Trust Officer, the bank offered retail clients banking and trust services. Not long after joining the Trust Department, the bank had evolved to a broader wealth management services model, and Shawn broadened his skill sets and credentials accordingly. Prior to his time with First Interstate, Shawn worked in the Trust Department of a local Wyoming bank.
Shawn is a graduate of the University of Wyoming, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance in 1995. He obtained the Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®) mark from the CFP Board of Standards in 2012.

His father owned an established CPA practice in Casper, Wyoming, giving Shawn a firsthand view of life as a financial professional from an early age. “I owe much of my work ethic and client-centric mindset to him,” Shawn recounts.
A native of Wyoming, Shawn met his wife 21 years ago and has been married for 18 years. Together, they have two children, a daughter who is 17 and son who is 14. “Most of my life is based around my family,” Shawn beams. In addition to having coached his son in football and traveling a good part of the year with his son’s baseball and his daughter’s volleyball team, Shawn and his family enjoy fishing, hunting, camping, and “being in the outdoors.” Longtime members of the Cowboy Joe Club, they are also devoted University of Wyoming fans. As Shawn puts it, “Brown and Gold and loyal to the end!”
Shawn is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys bow and rifle hunting, particularly during mule deer season. “At the end of the day, my favorite hobby is just sitting up in the mountains and looking at the countryside. It’s where I think and recharge.”
